According to the new requirements in AWS QC47, ATF Qualifiers (previously referred to as test supervisors) must obtain the AWS Welder Performance Qualification Endorsement (WPQ1) in order to witness AWS National Tests beginning March 1, 2026.
This endorsement is available to CWIs and SCWIs. This endorsement is designed for individuals who hold the CWI or SCWI credentials who are looking to broaden their welding inspector credential. The endorsement focuses on the teaching participants to conduct welder performance qualification tests, and qualify a welder’s ability to perform specific welding tasks and consistently produce high quality welds that meet established specifications.
WPQ1 requires two days of training (16 hours), teaching participants to conduct welder performance qualification tests, and qualify a welder's ability to perform specific welding tasks and consistently produce high quality welds that meet established specifications.
